Tongs

Tongs – One of the most basic and essential tools you will need for grilling are tongs. Invest in a high quality set of tongs and you will not be disappointed.
The tongs are the most-used cooking utensil when grilling, as they provide a way to move, rotate and turn the food with delicate precision. There are several kinds of pincers and you will want a pair that is long enough to keep your hands away from the heat of the fire. In general, 14 to 16 inch grippers will do the job.

The most common tongs used for grilling have long arms that pivot close to the handle. The gripping ends of the pincers should have a surface that will grip the food but not so rough that it will pierce the food. This will cause loss of juices and if you are grilling vegetables, the rough edges may tear them. The handle material is usually made of wood. This is to protect your hands from the heat.

The grippers need to be large enough to fit in your hand comfortably and still be able to maintain a good grip. Dropping a perfectly cooked steak or chop would be disastrous so investing in a high quality set of tongs is a great little insurance policy.
You may also want to consider a set of tongs for moving hot coals around. The proper placement of coals is very important to the outcome of the meal and, you don’t want to use the same tool for handling coals that you are using to handle the food. The tongs that you use for fire control can be almost exactly like the grippers you use for the food, unless you are planning on moving large chunks of wood around. In this case, you will want a more robust set of pincers that will handle the extra weight. You may also want to consider fire tongs with longer handles so your hands can stay a safe distance from the fire.
